Laser Hair Removal

Lightsheer Diode Laser

Background

The use of lasers for hair removal has been studied for a number of years. Hair bearing areas are treated with a focused beam of concentrated laser light which is selectively absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft, as well as in the surrounding hair follicles. This causes thermal destruction of these anatomical sites and disrupts the hair follicles' ability to regenerate. In turn, this procedure causes permanent hair reduction. Unlike electrolysis which kills one hair follicle at a time, the laser reaches and treats hundreds of follicles at a time.

Scientific Evidence

A clinical study evaluated the use of the LightSheer Diode Laser for hair removal. Of 92 patients, all had temporary hair loss and 89% had long-term hair loss. Regrowing hairs were shown to be thinner and lighter than previously observed. The Diode Laser causes permanent hair reduction without damaging the epidermis, regardless of skin type.

The Cooling Saphire Chill Tip

An integral part of the LightSheer Diode Laser is The Chill Tip. This contact cooling handpiece protects the skin by actively cooling the skin before, during, and after the laser light is transmitted. It also actively draws off heat from the skin surface. In addition, this compression brings the hair follicles closer to the skin where they can be more effectively targeted and disabled.

Restrictions on Treatment

Laser hair removal treatments should not be performed on patients with the following condition:

  • A history of keloid scarring.

  • Active infection or a history of herpes simplex in the treatment area.

  • Hypersensitivity to bleaching agents.

  • Use of Accutane within the preceding 6 months.

Before Treatment

Use sunscreen daily; any amount of sun tan will interfere with the effectiveness of the treatment and increase adverse reactions. Do not wax, pluck, or have electrolysis for at least four weeks prior to treatment. Shaving does not effect the treatment result.

After Treatment

Treated areas should be washed twice a day with cool water and a mild soap. Use our Post Laser Treatment Lotion twice daily to treated areas for 3 to 5 days or until healing is complete. Treated areas should be protected from direct exposure to sunlight. Sunscreen with SPF greater than 15 should be used at all times on the treated areas. Hair will begin to fall out of the follicle within the next week. You may rub the treated area with a dry towel to pull the hair out of the follicles. Do not shave. Shaving will prolong hair from falling out. Treatment should be repeated within one to three months, depending on hair cycle.

Sciton Profile Laser

What is PROFILE?

PROFILE contains an infrared laser that can selectively target microstructures such as hair follicles. It is very effective and the best choice when treating darker skin types because of the relatively low absorption of light by melanin. Additionally, the ability to safely treat sun-tanned skin makes this the treatment of choice for active individuals.

Can all skin colours be treated?

Yes, all skin types I to VI can be treated. Skin Type I is very fair, always burns, never tans (usually blonde hair and blue eyes). Skin Type VI never burns (dark skin, dark hair and eyes).

Can tanned skin be treated?

Tanned skin can be treated safely, but always inform your technician that you have been tanning, using tanning products, or exposed to the sun within the laser three weeks. They will adjust your treatment regimen accordingly to give you the safest, most effective experience.

What happens during hair removal treatment?

At the time of your consultation your technician will discuss the treatment with you and decide if you need a topical anesthetic cream. The area of your skin that is to be treated will be scanned with laser light from the PROFILE system. Treatment time will depend upon the area to be treated. A system for cooling your skin will be used to remove heat as it leaves the follicles and should ensure a comfortable treatment. However, since the sensation varies from individual to individual, a topical anesthesia can be provided. Let your technician know if you are very sensitive.

How does it work?

The PROFILE laser selectively targets your hair follicles and heats them with infrared energy. Unlike other processes the laser beam treats many hairs at once, making treatment of large areas practical. The PROFILE employs a unique computer guided scanning system that automates the treatment, ensuring that your skin is rapidly and evenly treated. The computer sets the parameters and places the beam in an optimum pattern for your skin to ensure a safe, fast, effective and gentle treatment.

What should I expect after treatment?

Some redness and slight swelling may be present in the area that has been treated; however, this should subside with a few hours. If any prolonged redness or swelling occurs consult your technician. Keep the treated area clean, use at least SPF 15 sunscreen when outdoors, and follow post laser instructions.

How many treatments will I need?

You may need to be treated from 6 to 8 times at intervals of 3 to 8 weeks. There are three phases of hair growth - anagen, catagen, and telogen. Only hairs in the active growth phase, anagen , can be successfully treated.

Is there a risk of complications?

Temporary pigmentation changes are possible but seldom occur. Always discuss your concerns with your technician prior to treatment.
